San José del Cabo is the chief municipal city of Los Cabos, which is located on the tip of the Baja California peninsula. San José was founded in the year 1730.
Cabo San Lucas is the cosmopolitan and noisy tourist destination and on the contrary, San José del Cabo is relaxed, quiet and colonial, is more what someone has in mind when thinking of a typical Mexican town.
The historic plaza with pedestrian areas, colonial houses, and buildings of colonial design and the relaxed pace with which things happen in the city are just perfect for a soothing walk. Some of the main attractions you’ll find here are Plaza Mijares (main square) La Iglesia de Mission of San José del Cabo, the Town Hall, House of Culture, the San José Estuary, Galleries of art and a great variety of restaurants.
A good place to start your touring the city is in the heart of San José del Cabo, in the lovely main square called Plaza Mijares, the square full of trees with its attractive kiosk, an amphitheater where a variety of cultural events are held outdoors.
There is not a fixed events calendar, but there is always something to enjoy, at least an ice cream while relaxing in one of the benches.
This also is the center of all the activity in San José, on the West side of the square is located the Church of San José, that raises on the place where the San José Mission was established. You will find restaurants, art galleries, jewelry stores and shops in Zaragoza, Obregón St., Hidalgo and Boulevard Mijares streets.
Estero San José
This beautiful oasis is a sanctuary for birds of Baja California Sur and has been designated as a Natural Reserve. The estuary was originally baptized San Bernabe Bay in the 16th century by Sebastián Vizcaíno and it was used as a safe harbor for trips between Acapulco and Manila. Consists of the waters of the river San José flowing from the Sierra de la Laguna.
Is the habitat of 150 species of birds and to observe them is a sensational experience. Two birds that are most commonly seen in the area are frigate-birds and brown pelicans, a constant reminder of the proximity to the sea.
Puerto Los Cabos
Puerto Los Cabos is located 5 minutes from the center of San José del Cabo, is a luxury real estate development that includes the second marina in the area. Also offers galleries, a botanical garden of desert species called Wirikuta, there are restaurants, cafes, shops and other things to do along the front of the marina.
